RYC: My parents' "distance" was exactly why I sought to prove my independence. It does wonders for a kids' self-esteem when they're constantly being reminded of how the roof is kept over their head or they were given Christmas gifts. Especially when said kid is perfectly behaved and causes no trouble.

I moved out way sooner than I was prepared all to prove them wrong. I slept on a friend's couch for a month and worked three jobs to save up for an apartment, while taking (and paying for) summer courses between my junior and senior years of college. I didn't get so much as a "We're proud of you" from either of them. I did, however, get a lecture from my father about wasting money when I dropped ONE course due to stress and time constraints. MY money, mind you. Meh...
